i was listening to the radio and one of the djs was talking about how she didn't think she'd be able to live without a smart phone because she had to be up-to-date with what was going on whether it was email or texting. there was an incident where her husband was trying to contact her for over an hour about getting a ride, but she never picked up and so he had to call a taxi to come get him and drive him to his next appointment.i don't think i'll ever buy a smart phone because people end up being so attached to it. every sound it makes, they've got to check their phone and see if it's important. really? whatever happened to someone calling them in case of an emergency? now we're so distracted with alerts that our phones give off and while we're in the middle of a conversation with a real live person, you've got to check your phone because it dings? that's just plain rude, first of all. second, nothing is that important where your current conversation has to be paused. i think we're too used to convenience and things happening right away.
i was in a food court at a mall and just glanced at the people who were sitting alone at tables. 95% of them had their heads down and were staring at their phone. one lady was reading, but still. they were all looking at their personal screen. whatever happened to people-watching? people can't be bored anymore, but have to be occupied with a video game or a video. even children are like that. stick an ipad into their hands and they'll shut up for an hour or two while you're at a restaurant or waiting in line or taking a road trip. heck, if you really need to contact me, call me. that's what phones are for. i'd like to live my life in real-time and not be too attached to my phone. |

july the fourth who would've thought i'd have enough of fireworks? well, we went to a july fourth party hosted by one of lance's soccer buddies and his neighbor from a couple doors down who was going to be doing the fourth of july fireworks for kings' island put on a display of fireworks i've never ever seen before. it was professionally done and the fireworks were huge, bright, and beautiful flowers of light. the only problem: it was about 25 minutes of non-stop fire crackers. it was fantastic for the first 10-15 minutes, then it got redundant pretty quickly. T liked them too, although he was pretty out of it because it was about 2 hours after his bedtime.
